Georgia is one of the most ancient countries in Europe! It is located in the central and western parts of the Caucasus Mountains, the crossroads between Europe and Asia.

Georgia is one of the most culturally fascinating and scenically beautiful countries in Europe but it is also one that is less known to most international travelers.

This is because it is slightly off the beaten track … it’s a 5-hour flight from London! But the visitor who takes the time visit Georgia is rewarded with stunning views that include a huge number of ancient monasteries, panoramic mountain tops and unique modern art at their museums.

Georgia also boasts fantastic mountain hikes and climbing treks, lots of friendly people, and award-winning wines and very fine local cuisine. In fact back in the days of the Soviet Union, Georgia was the main supplier of wine to Russia.

As you will see by looking at our other Caucasian tours, a trip to Georgia can be combined with tours of neighboring Azerbaijan and Armenia. Turkey is also nearby and shares a small border with Georgia.

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 1

Arrival in Tbilisi, Georgia

You will be met at the airport and driven to your hotel. If you are not too tired after your flight, you’ll see that the hotel is located in the center of Tbilisi. This means that before or after dinner, you can walk around this lively city and start to get a feel for it.

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 2

Historical Tbilisi Walking Tour

Today will be devoted to a walking tour of the historical old town center of Tbilisi. You will stroll down narrow, cobblestone streets past colorful houses with distinctive balconies.

Tbilisi also has ancient domed sulfur baths, which you can sample if you plan ahead. You will certainly smell the sulfur as you walk by.

There will also be time for a cable car ride up to the ancient Narikala Fortress, from where you are granted a fabulous panoramic view of the city below.

The day will also include a visit to the historical museum, where you can learn why Georgia was known as the Land of the Golden Fleece. Towards the end of the day, it will be time for one of Tbilisi’s famous traditions, a show at the Gabriadze Puppet Theater.

After all these activities, you will be glad to sit down to a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurant choices available.

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 3

Travel to Mtskheta – Kazbegi National Park

After breakfast, the day will begin with an exciting road trip into the heart of the Caucasus Mountains along the Georgian Military Highway.

This epic roadway runs 132 miles to the Russian border and has played (and is still playing) a great historical and political role.

Your first stop is Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia, which is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

Mtskheta contains many of Georgia’s most beautiful and historical churches.

Don’t even try to pronounce ‘Mtskheta’. The Georgian language is notoriously difficult and is full of these ‘consonant clusters’ that foreigners have been known to strangle themselves on.

We then continue on to Ananuri, a 13th-century castle complex and scene of many fierce battles.

Towards the end of the day, we finally arrive at the town of Stepantsminda in the Kazbegi National Park.

This town is a center for outdoor activities in the heart of the park. As the day draws to a close, we can climb up to the spectacular Holy Trinity Church for some magnificent views.

After this, you will be ready for a nice dinner at a local restaurant.

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 4

Exploring Kazbegi National Park

Today we will set off through the spectacular Snow Valley and up to the remote village of Juta, over 7,000 feet above sea level.

Surrounded by gorgeous views in every direction, Juta is a small, traditional village that is completely cut off from the rest of the country for six months of the year.

After exploring the village itself, you can set off on foot to the lower slopes of Mt. Chaukhebi, which offer some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.

Your own capacity for hiking and climbing will have an impact on what you do today. Your guide will be there to make sure that you are not overtaxed.

A local expert will teach you a cooking class to end the day. Dinner will follow.

Georgia’s most infamous son, Josef Stalin

Chiatura Cable Cars – “Stalin’s Rope Roads”

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 5

Traveling to Kazbegi – Gori – Chiatura – Kutaisi

Heading west today and descending from the mountains, you will reach Gori, the birthplace of Georgia’s most infamous son, Josef Stalin.

Here you can visit Stalin’s house and take a guided tour of his museum before continuing on to a traditional winery that produces Georgian BIO-wines.

Enjoy a tasting at Dvali Wine Cellar before driving to the mining town of Chiatura, home to around 20 Soviet-era cable cars.

These cable cars, which were originally built to allow workers to get to local mining sites, were considered too dangerous to use until they were renovated by a French company in 2021.

They now form a fascinating tourist attraction and allow visitors to see the mines and get a birds-eye view of the surrounding landscape from the safe new cable cars.

The final stop of the day will be Kutaisi, Georgia’s second-most important city.

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 6

Explore Kutaisi – Travel to Akhaltsikhe

This morning will be devoted to exploring the sights of the old city of Kutaisi, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Colchis, where Jason and his Argonauts came in search of the Golden Fleece.

First, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gelati Monastery, founded in the 12th century by the most famous Georgian King, David the IV.

From here, move on to Borjomi, a quaint little spa town known for its mineral water and sulfur springs.

This will be an excellent place to have some lunch. We then continue on to Akhaltsikhe, where you will visit the Rabati Fortress, which dates back to the 12th century.

Classic Georgia Tour – Day 7

Explore Akhaltsikhe – Travel to Vardzia – Tbilisi

The day will begin with a visit to the Khertvisi Fortress, dating back to feudal times. It stands in a dramatic location on top of a rocky hill.

Leaving the fortress, your tour moves on to the Vardzia Cave Complex, which was a cave monastery consisting of hundreds of caves formerly inhabited by monks.

This site also includes a church hewn out of rock with amazing 12th-century frescoes.

It will now be time to head back to Tbilisi, driving along a scenic route close to both the Turkish and Armenian borders.

Upon returning to Tbilisi, check into the Brim Hotel.

Classic Georgia Tour: Day 8

Culinary Adventures in Tbilisi

Day 8 of your tour will be devoted to exploring the Tbilisi food scene and diving into the food culture of Georgia as you explore markets and backstreets on your final day in Tbilisi.

Begin the tour at a bakery, where you will sample Puri, a traditional Georgian bread.

Then you will go exploring the Deserter’s Bazaar, the city’s oldest market, named after the soldiers who sold their equipment here at the beginning of the 19th century.

Continue on to Freedom Square to enjoy a meal in a family-owned restaurant before the final stop of the day at the city’s first wine bar.

Here you will enjoy a guided tasting tour to learn all about Georgia’s ancient wine-making traditions. This puts a perfect end to your Georgian adventure.
